The Gandhi Within
by Ramendra Kumar

The Time Magazine declared him the second most important man of the 20th century.

And the man voted the most important had this to say about Him: “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this, ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.”

Yes, Albert Einstein, the greatest genius of his time, was a great admirer of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the greatest leader and philosopher of his age. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and our very own Chacha Nehru, Subhash Bose and billions and billions of others, transgressing all boundaries of nationality, language, region and culture, have been mesmerized by this modern Saint’s simple words and compelling logic. There is no aspect of life and living in which Bapu did not create benchmarks and set standards which even today remain the last word in courage and commitment, truth and morality.

January 30th is Martyr’s day, the death anniversary of the man who gave a new meaning to the words: strength and struggle, faith and freedom. An occasion when politicians will unleash their rhetoric, bureaucrats will mumble homilies and media will encash his name. In this rigmarole will be lost the Man and his Message.

It is my strong belief that in each of us there is a Gandhi. The good in us frequently gets smothered by the pressures of life and living. My appeal to you, my young friends, is to nourish and nurture the Gandhi within so that he will help you remain ‘free’ and childlike forever and ever….

This update the results of the first competition are being declared. I congratulate all those who participated – they are all winners.
