Everlasting and Eternal

The chill of winter, the warmth of Christmas and the sizzle of the fast approaching New Year – what more can one ask for!

In this festive issue I bring you a special Christmas story which pays tribute to the spirit of Christmas. Read the story and tell me what you think about it. Doesn’t this festival teach us values that are everlasting and eternal.

An event which demonstrated that human values are still alive and kicking was Tsunami. A year ago the killer Tsunami struck Asia and left behind in its wake untold destruction and misery. If Tsunami demonstrated the cruelty of nature it also brought to light the resilience of the human and the humane spirit.

But do we need disasters to prove that we are human and humane? Can’t we demonstrate these qualities in our day to day life and living? I leave you with these questions, with the hope that you will share with me your answers.

Beginning from this issue we have a special treat for you. Long ago a learned Brahman, Vishnu Sharma was asked by a king to teach his 3 sons niti - the wise conduct of life. Sharma, an inventive and creative scholar, decided to teach them by telling them value based stories. And the result of this unique experiment was the collection of 84 fascinating tales of animals and birds, built around simple values called the Panchatantra. For centuries, these fables have been entertaining, guiding and inspiring generations of readers, both young and old, across the world. These immortal tales are being brought to you by Swapna Dutta in her inimitable style.
